Detwiler’s Family and Market News

August 18th, 2011

Detwiler Farm Market news …

It’s always extra hard this time of the year to eat right …it gets hot and we just want to drink or snack it seems. The hot weather should make us think and eat “light, fresh, food. Produce is a great choice and is very good for our health.

I grew up in Pa. and have many memories of gardening and harvest, “not so much the good old days”’  but more “the back breaking days” picking beans or peas then having to help mom can or freeze. I know it’s not all fun, but how many of the children today don’t have any of this experience? It didn’t always pay the best but somehow makes the best memories.

I remember the neighbor ladies getting together to freeze sweet corn together. Or canning what you just harvested from your garden or bought at the local market… getting together to make some homemade Ice-Cream .

Today many things continue to change and can be quite a challenge to each one especially seniors. The way we communicate, the way we travel, the way we buy.

Our cell phones are so handy and offer a level of convenience and safety and the ability to stay in touch with each other. It’s a comfort to me to know my mom has a phone to get a hold of me at all times, if she would fall somewhere or break down on the road. Communication is awesome today.

We get in a new car and they keep adding gadgets and knobs. We used to be able to do our own fixing, now we need an expert. I remember my dads 56 Chevy, to bad we don’t have it yet, as it’s worth many times what he paid. Today’s cars are wonderful.

The modern roads and ability to travel many miles in safe climate controlled vehicles. Jets that continue to give us fast safe travel bringing us closer to distant family.

We go to the store or market and find many things cost much more than a few years ago even, yet many businesses find it harder to make profits. So we keep looking for good service and good price., and get frustrated when we are taken advantage of.

Here at Detwiler’s we do our best to bring you a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables at the best prices. We often here people say “this is the way we remember it was years ago“. You can shop knowing that everything we sell, we guarantee 100%, sometimes produce just isn’t right, so we want to make it right. We’re open Monday to Saturday 8Am. To 7 Pm. So you can come to the Market whenever you like. Saturday gets real busy ,as we a lot of times find some great deals for the weekend.

Right now the New Crop Eastern Apples season is starting who doesn’t remember picking apples. I can almost feel the cool weather thinking of picking apples in the fall with my dad and brothers, dad never had a pickup so we took the station wagon and filled it up with apples I remember the orchard man always giving us extra, and a big smile to see how much we enjoyed his apples. Remember the Cider? Homemade Applesauce?

Detwiler’s Deli is a must stop as we have lots of good old fashioned meats and cheese to choose from, all Rich in taste and tradition from Holmes Co. Ohio and Lancaster Pa. you will love the flavor and the price will make you glad you stopped by.

Detwiler’s Ice-Cream is worth the trip all by itself. But is just a fun way to start or end your shopping experience. I love Ice-Cream.

We are located corner of Palmer Blvd. and Packinghouse Rd.  or south of Fruitville Rd. and east of Cattlemen Rd. or go to our web Detwilersfarmmarket.com there should be a locater button there.

Wow, how about that stock market..and I thought the produce business was tough…

My Uncle Paul told me never invest what you can’t afford to lose..so I’m pretty safe there, because so far I never had that much. Someone else told me to always do what you know, thats real safe, many people get hurt trying to make the fast dollar doing what some fast taking salesman or friend talks them into, only to discover they should have just been faithful where they were.

I don’t know who told me to do what you love then you never need to go to work, is this true? We all have difficult days, when we want to run, but we need to stay. Talking with my uncle I was surprized at his attitude, even though he lost some money, he said it’s OK , we’ll find some other deals and in a couple years it will be better… what an example. I told someone I’d rather lose money selling Tomatoes than doing anything else but that was in my big mouth days we all need to be able to pay our bills. So, rest if you must, do a little reevaluating and be the person God made you to be.

You know what I love to invest in ? My family and friends and that includes you. Many times I see where I could or should do more, I see the look on your face when someone takes or is selfish, or the look when someone gives or serves you… ahh…the golden rule, yes treat others like you want to be treated. Difficult? Sometimes, but what a reward to see the smile.

The weather here and weather where the produce is grown…brings many challenges to Sam and Caleb to keep it all where it needs to be,FRESH. Sam says he got a great deal for you on cherries, few things are better than those Dark Sweet Cherries. It sounds like Caleb found another load of Watermelons, I can’t beleive how hard it is too get a good watermelon right now.

Sam just brought me a cob of Sweet Corn from Ohio, wow thats good, he thinks it extra good and sweet because it’s from where his fiance from, by the way Sam is getting married 11-11-11 in Ohio.

Dorcas was out of deli for a couple days said she didn’t feel good, today she is here again.Praise the Lord. She is definetly a blessing to us, and knows how to get you what you want our DEli has become as popular as our produce of course we keep it full, friendly, and prices that keep our bottom line very lean. Great Taste, ask for a sample. Great Prices. Great Service.

I don’t know if I should say anything about the Ice Cream it’s to much of a temptation to me when it’s hot and I know I acn get an Ice Cream Cone…but you’ll definately love this COOL! Sam started making Healthy Green Smoothies for us that have like Spinach and Cucumber and I don’t know what all in them and they give you what you need when it’s hot.

Hey, We want to see YOU.

God Bless You all,

Hot???

Eat PLenty of Salad  and Drink Water

Last night we had vegtable beef soup for supper. My wife brought a couple ears of sweet corn, stalk of celery, a couple carrots, fresh green beans, a zuchini squash, cabbage home and cut them up. She cooked them and I added the beef I cooked before and she added a couple cups crushed tomatoes. This was an awesome meal! She made whole wheat Bread and we had Amish Roll Butter to put on the bread with some Colby Cheese. Wow, my son Caleb said soup in the summer time but I have to tell you it was light enough and hit the spot, even though it was hot it was very refreshing.

Henry’s  Health …Tid Bits

First  to a large part most of us KNOW BETTER than we eat or do.

So today is a good day to start to eat the RIGHT FOODS….

1.First hurdle in eating healthy is we don’t have the healthy food readily available … change what you buy , BUY fresh , healthy, raw, lean, whole, and the list could go on and on…is it good??? or good for your body.

2.Hey, stop putting that good food away in your pantry or refrig, you don’t eat it unless its handy and ready to eat …If it’s fruit or veggies wash them if they need to be cut to be eaten, cut it up…just watch your kids or your better half , start eating them up, Fresh cut Melon and Cantaloupe, Honey-Dew, what a fun way to cool down. Blueberries, Blackberries and Rasberries in a dish with some fresh peaches maybe a little sweetner and extra hot need a real cool down freeze them and thaw slightly and watch out, or you eat the whole bowl! Why do we grab the chips and fatty food I think by habit and because we like them  and that OK but we can start liking the GOOD FOOD …Chips, Pretzels, Cookies and Sodas our handy and easy and fun .  Somehow we need to make the Good stuff handy and fun too.

3. Start now…we all at different places in life and we all have different needs and health issues so some have to make big changes fast but most of us need to start with slower changes, so we don’t give up.Those eating fruits and veggies now maybe need to change up to higher quality and  more nutritious veggies, instead of corn and potatoes, maybe try BROCCOLI or Spinach with a Sweet Potatoe. Those baking can put less sugar in than the recipe calls for , ”my wife puts in some fresh ground whole wheat flour and less sugar and lots of times we don’t mind at all”.  Salads, use more nutritious lettuce, than Iceburg or use it and mix it with Green or Red l;eaf lettuce and Spinach…all kinds of recipes for healthier dressings and low-cal this or that but try to eat more the way God made it food. I could talk about Apple Cider Vinegar or Olive Oil but I want to keep it simple.

Enjoy HEALTH,  BUY the better Choice of Fresh Healthy Foods ..PREPARE it so its handy and then enjoy the fun of Healthy Eating.
